Edward S. Sutton, 93, of Red Hook, NY, died on April 27, 2017, at home with his family, in Red Hook, of natural causes.
Born on September 12, 1923, to Jesse and Mary Sutton in New Harrisburg, Ohio.
Edward graduated as salutatorian from Malvern High School in 1942 where he played football, basketball, and baseball.
He served as First Lieutenant in the Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1946 as a navigator/radar operator on a B-29 Super-fortress aircraft stationed in Tinian and Okinawa. His unit was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation.
Edward married Wanda Jean Miller on December 28, 1947 in Waynesburg, Ohio and she survives at home in Red Hook.
He graduated from Akron University in 1949 with a degree in Electrical Engineering and was a member of Sigma Tau, an Honors Engineering Fraternity.
Edward started his career with the Ohio Power Company in 1949, and then worked at IBM for 38 years as a technical and managerial engineer.
He served as both a deacon and an elder in the Yorktown First Presbyterian Church, and later was an active member of St. John's Reformed Church in upper Red Hook.
He was a great father and loving husband. Edward enjoyed golf, bridge, crossword puzzles, reading, and woodworking. He was also accomplished at home maintenance, repair and improvement, as well as gardening and grounds maintenance.
In 2010, at age 87, he wrote a 60 page autobiography entitled, "My Charmed and Blessed Life."
Edward is survived by his wife of 69 years, Wanda J. Sutton, of Red Hook, NY; a daughter, Pamela D. Olstad and son-in-law Jay R. Olstad of Rhinebeck, NY; a son, Mark E. Sutton and daughter-in-law Kathy B. Sutton of Cross Roads, TX.; and a daughter, Beth A. Sutton of Red Hook, NY; along with two nieces, Louise Rininger of Carrollton, OH., and Diane Bickley of Canton, OH.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse and Mary Sutton of Carrollton, OH; and a sister and brother-in-law, Inez and Wilmer Davis, and a nephew Gary Davis of Minerva, OH.
A memorial service for Edward will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, May 5th, at St. John's Reformed Church, Old Post Rd. Red Hook, NY.
