Helen Gergel, 91, of Red Hook, NY, passed away on Thursday, October 1, 2020 at the Renaissance Rehabilitation and Nursing Care Center in Staatsburg, NY.
Born on October 26, 1928, in New York, NY, she was the daughter of the late Christian and Maria (Herring) Firsching. After being born, she and her parents lived in numerous places in and around NYC, and then moved to Little Ferry, NJ, eventually settling in apple country in upstate NY- namely Red Hook.
For many years, Helen worked at a waitress throughout the area, including Peter's Inn. She also worked for a number of years in the cafeteria of the Red Hook Central Schools- retiring in 1985. Helen also packed blueberries at the local farms in Red Hook.
Her hobbies included crafting, knitting, cooking, baking and canning fruits & vegetables from her organic garden. Helen loved to share her stories about her life and experiences; however, her greatest joy was spending time with her family. In her youth, she would spend time on her aunt's farm in Middleburgh, NY- where they would roller-skate, have picnics, and visit the Ronkonkoma Beach.
She married George Gergel and raised three children-Marie (the late Ed) Batchelor, Don (Caroline) Gergel, and Rose Gergel. She is also survived by her eight grandchildren; Christopher, William, Bryan, Kristin, Nadine, Erika, Karl, and Robert; her cousins, Mary Case and daughter Julia Winter, and Rosemary Chesseman and children, along with several cousins and extended family in Germany.
In addition to her parents, several aunts, uncles, and cousins, she was predeceased by her "life sister" cousin, Lottie Honsicker and stepdaughter, Rose.
Funeral services and interment at St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, Red Hook, NY will be private.
Arrangements are under the direction of Burnett & White Funeral Homes 7461 S. Broadway, Red Hook, NY.
