Benjamin D. Roberts

Benjamin D. Roberts, 41, recently of Stanfordville, NY, passed away on Friday, October 8, 2021 at Northern Dutchess Hospital in Rhinebeck, NY.

Born on June 28, 1980, in Rochester, NY, he was the son of the late Thomas and Nancy (Walrath) Roberts. Ben graduated with his Bachelors from Miami University of Ohio where he studied Architecture. In addition, he received his degree in Culinary Arts and Management from The Institute of Culinary Education in New York City. Ben was the founding co-owner and farmer of Grass + Grit Farm in New Paltz, NY and worked most recently for Wheatley Farm in Stanfordville.

Ben enjoyed all things gardening. A homesteader and farmer, he reveled in being able to share his hard work with the people he loved most. Ben was an out-of-this-world cook and was most in his element in the kitchen with the stove on, music blasting and a glass of wine nearby. He enjoyed having long nights by the bonfire and never shied away from baking a late night batch of cookies to enjoy with his friends. On a mellow night, you could expect to hear Ben yelling (in joy or anger) at the Red Sox game or checking the latest baseball stats. One of his favorite ways to decompress was snuggling with his two nerds - a self-proclaimed "cat man."

His greatest moments were always shared with his partner in life and farming, Maddie. They opened their home to friends and family often and through the creation of their business plunged head first into the Hudson Valley farming community. Ben was extremely deliberate and thoughtful in everything he did. He worked tirelessly on his garden and work, continually striving to improve and make things better than before. Always ready to lend an ear and offer sage advice, Ben was a wonderful friend, brother, son and partner.

Ben is survived by his longtime partner, Maddie Morley of Stanfordville, NY; his siblings, Michael Roberts of Rochester, NY, Annie Pertes of Bucks County, PA; his step-mother, Paula Roberts of Rochester, NY; his step-brother, Ben Stevens of Rochester, NY; in addition to extended family and friends.

Memorial donations may be made in Benjamin's memory to the Northeast Farmers of Color Land Trust, the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, and the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley.
