John William “Jack” Cayea, 98, of Rhinebeck, NY, passed away on Monday, December 27th, 2021 at his home.
Born on July 20th, 1923, in Orange, NJ, he was the son of the late George and Mary (Schmidt) Cayea. Jack married Dolores L. DeFreytas on April 19, 1947 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Queens, NY, and she predeceased him on June 11, 2015.
Jack enlisted in the United States Navy during World War II and served as an aviation machinist mate. Under his care, he ensured that the aircraft whether it be fighters or bombers were fit to fly. When not fixing planes or flying patrols over the Mediterranean Sea, he played baseball for the Navy. As a starting pitcher, he took his team to the championship game in Rome against Army.
After his service to his country, he went on to serve the people of New York as a New York City fire fighter. He retired as the Chief of the 42nd Battalion in Brooklyn.
He was a communicant of St. Christopher's Church in Red Hook, NY.
Jack was a skilled wood worker and worked mostly in pine.
Jack is survived by his sons, John William (Susan) Cayea of Forrestburgh, NY, James George (Margaret Mary) Cayea of Red Hook, NY, Kenneth Peter (Krista) Cayea of Boiceville, NY and Jeffrey Thomas (Andrea) Cayea of Port Washington, NY; his eleven grandchildren; his nine great grandchildren; along with extended family, colleagues and friends.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00 PM on Friday, December 31, 2021 at St. Christopher's Church in Red Hook, NY. Burial will be at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Rhinecliff.
Calling hours will be private.
