Obituary of Grace Alexander

Grace Alexander, 78, of Red Hook, NY, died Friday, December 6, 2002, at the The Thompson House in Rhinebeck, after a long and valiant struggle with Parkinson's disease. Born in Union City, NJ on February 14, 1924, she was the daughter of Warren and Olive Still Adriance. She attended Gilford College in Greensboro, NC, and worked at for the FBI in Washington, DC under the J. Edgar Hoover Administration. On May 6, 1945 in Washington, DC, in a ceremony conducted by US Senate Chaplain Peter Marshall, she married Clifford Alexander. Mr. Alexander died on August 30, 2001. Mrs. Alexander, along with her husband, owned and operated Alexander's Cleaners in Red Hook and Rhinebeck. For several years she managed the Rhinebeck location, and was well know in the Rhinebeck community. She loved her community and her neighbors. In Red Hook, she was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, was active in local politics and the Red Hook Home Bureau. An active member of the Red Hook Garden Club, her love of flowers and her green thumb earned her a reputation as "the flower lady". Many of her friends and neighbors enlisted her help to nurse their ailing plants back the health. After retiring, she and her husband moved to Bonita Springs, Florida where they lived for 25 years before returning to Red hook several years ago. Mrs. Alexander is survived by a son & daughter-in-law, Clifford B. & Meeta Alexander, Jr. of Red Hook, NY, a daughter & son-in-law, Dawn & Milton Ross of Centerville, OH, and four grandchildren, Amy Hiday of Springboro, OH, Jonathan Petz of Powell, OH, Timothy Petz of Golden, CO, and Rajkumal Harjani of New Brunswick, NJ, Funeral services will be held at a later date, and will be private as will her interment which will be in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, Red Hook.
