Obituary of Ellen J Hogan

Ellen J. (Vitzthum) Hogan, born in Queens Village, NY and longtime Red Hook resident, died on October 7, 2019, at her home in Red Hook, NY. Ellen was born on March 19, 1933 to Christian and Adelaide Vitzthum. She was baptized into the Roman Catholic Faith on April 23, 1933 and received her First Communion at Our Lady Of Lourdes in Queens Village. She was confirmed at St. Peter's in Poughkeepsie, NY. Ellen was a daily communicant at St. Christopher/ St. Sylvia Roman Catholic Church in Red Hook, NY.

Ellen graduated with honors from Red Hook Central School in 1950, where she was active in chorus, news staff, ditto staff, intramurals and other activities. Following graduation, she entered St. Francis School of Nursing, Poughkeepsie, NY. She graduated and received her RN in 1953.

Ellen married her high school sweetheart, James Hogan, at St. Christopher's Church. They have been blessed with a wonderful and loving family.

After many years of raising her family, Ellen returned to nursing, became a Hospice Volunteer and a real estate agent.

She and Jim enjoyed their retirement years traveling and camping. Most important to Ellen was watching her family grow as she welcomed many grandchildren and great grandchildren into her life. Each and every one of them was her pride and joy.

Ellen was very involved in the parish life at St. Christopher/St. Sylvia Church. She participated in the choir throughout the years. She and her husband, James, founded Our Lady Queen of Peace Prayer Group which met for over 20 years. Ellen also headed up the Garden Committee along with the upkeep of the interior of the Church. She also coordinated the Rosary Altar Society.

Ellen was predeceased by her husband, James Hogan, her Mother and Father, Christian and Adelaide Vitzthum, and her brother-in-law, Lawrence Hogan Jr. and her sisters-in-law, Mary Hogan and Rose Vitzthum.

Ellen is survived by her children and their spouses; daughter & son in law: Barbara (Richard) Totman and their children Daniel (Stacie) Totman, Lisa (Jared) Wagner, Kate (Vincent) La Spina, Gabor Totman, and Hannah (Jeremias Teran) Totman; her daughter & son in law: Kathleen (James) Pell and their children Thomas (Ester) Pell, and Christopher (Yanyan) Pell; her son and daughter in law: William (Sandra) Hogan, and their children, Benjamin, and Brian Hogan; her son and daughter in law: James (Sherri) Hogan and their children, Kevin (Ally), Meghan, and Daniel Hogan; and her daughter and son in law: Patricia (Thomas) Lococo and their children Caleb, Elizabeth, Joshua, Gabriela, Julia, and Addisu Lococo; her great grandchildren: Lauren, Christian, and Patrick Totman; Kaylee, Bridgette, James, and Liam Wagner; Alexia, Abigail, and Grace La Spina; Nikolai Teran; and Timothy and Emmilyn Pell. Ellen is also survived by her brother, Laurence Vitzthum; along with several nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends as well as her Church Family.

At Ellen's request, there will be no calling hours. There will be an evening prayer service at St. Christopher/St.Sylvia Church on Wednesday, October 9, 2019 at 7PM. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, October 10, 2019 at 11AM at St. Christopher/St. Sylvia Church.
