Obituary of Virginia E Schwab

Virginia Elizabeth "Ginny" Schwab, of Red Hook and formerly of Bedford, NY and Falmouth MA, passed away Saturday October 19, 2019 at the Specialty Care Hospital in Rochelle Park, NJ surrounded by her family.

Born on June 28, 1943 on Catalina Island in California, she was the daughter of Kenneth Parker and raised in Highland, IL. Ginny married her sweetheart, James Leo Schwab, on June 5, 1971, in Chicago.

Ginny attended Southern Illinois University then worked for Mayor Daley in the poverty programs of Chicago. One of her most proud moments was taking part in the first march on Selma, AL as she dedicated her time to the war on poverty. She took time off to raise her family, and then returned to work after moving to Bedford, NY where she was the director of the Community Resource Center and worked in the charitable organization named the Chowder Marching Society. Ginny had many accomplishments in her life, but her greatest pride and joy came from being a devoted wife to her beloved husband and a loving mother to her daughters.

She loved animals throughout her life, and had them taken care of mostly by her husband, Jim. Her affection for animals started when she was young on the farm in Southern Illinois.

After raising her family in Bedford, NY, Jim & Ginny retired to Falmouth, MA. She enjoyed her time on the Cape, and quickly found charitable work at the local food pantry and community center in Falmouth. However, with her grandchildren in the Hudson Valley, she soon moved back, first to Pawling, NY and then to Red Hook, NY. She touched many lives wherever she was, forming new friendships wherever she went, and was adored by many. Her quick wit and insightful character will be sorely missed by the many whose lives she touched. Despite carrying great pain and physical challenges, she was able to light up a room and make all those around her smile.

She was a communicant of St. Christopher's/ St. Sylvia's Church, in Red Hook, NY and member of the Lady's Guild of the parish.

Ginny is survived by her most loving spouse Jim, and her two daughters and their spouses: Christy and Rune Bekkelund of Patterson, NY; Kate and Michael Kortbus of Red Hook, NY; and her grandchildren Annie, Heidi, Quinlan, Nina, Schuyler and Macarius.
