Obituary of Hildegart K Szak

Hildegart Szak, age 84, of Red Hook, NY passed away on April 7, 2020 at The Thompson House in Rhinebeck, NY, with her loving daughters by her side. Hildegart was born on December 9, 1935 in Bürgstadt am Main, Germany to Maria and Eugen Walter. She immigrated to the United States in 1956, sponsored by an aunt living in New York City. Her early employment experiences were as housekeeper and cook on Park Avenue. Hildegart married her husband, Mihály (Michael), in 1961. Shortly thereafter, he was drafted into the U.S. Army. They enjoyed their newlywed years at Fort Bliss, TX. Later, while raising their two daughters, they worked hard together renovating properties in upstate New York and they owned and managed three small businesses. Hildegart was an extraordinary homemaker. She was known for her outstanding German-Hungarian cooking and baking and often hosted dinners and celebrations. Her sewing and needlework skills were exceptional. She had a special talent of being able to repurpose vintage remnants and create something new, beautiful, and wonderful. She shared her expertise and taught many of these skills when she volunteered with Girl Scouts of the USA. In addition to her creative pursuits, Hildegart was an avid reader of local news, history, biographies, and memoirs. She enjoyed choral singing and dancing in her younger years. She had a playful spirit and was feisty until her last days. Hildegart was predeceased by her husband in 1996. She is survived by daughters, Monica and Christine; grandchildren, Kyle, Samantha, and Nicholas; great-grandson, Adrian; cousins, extended family, longtime friends, new friends, and neighbors. Beloved and cherished by many, Hildegart is greatly missed and will always be remembered with deep appreciation and love. The family would like to take the opportunity to thank the entire staff and volunteers at Northern Dutchess Hospital and The Thompson House in Rhinebeck for their care and compassion. Memorial donations may be made in Hildegart Szak's memory to Friends of Seniors of Dutchess County, 9 Vassar Street #24, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601, an organization run entirely by amazing volunteers who were essential to Hildegart and her family.
